As someone who has suffered from mild but persistent acne all her life, I know what a menace it could be. For a person with acne-prone skin, nothing is more dear than a flawless complexion. Thankfully, my acne is largely under control now. I wish I knew things that I knew now about keeping pimples at bay. I will share the tips and tricks that helped me get rid of acne down below. I hope these tips will help you get rid of acne.
What Causes Acne
I will not go into the science of acne. I will tell you what I personally think causes acne. I think what you eat and do not eat determines the condition of your skin. There are some foods (discussed below) that you need to incorporate in your diet to keep your skin clear. However, just including these foods alone will not help. You must also remove foods from your diet (discussed below) that can cause acne.
Tips To Get Rid Of Acne Naturally
Eliminate Foods That Cause Acne
Certain foods make skin oily and break you out. However, foods that break me out might not necessarily break you out too. To check which foods break you out, try to eliminate the following foods from your diet completely for two weeks at least. If you notice a positive change in your skin, some foods are a culprit. To find out which one it is, reintroduce one food every week. This will help you find out which one was breaking you out. Here are the possible culprits:
Chicken and Eggs
Cow and Goat Meat
I advise cutting out sugar completely. As far as chicken and meat is concerned, please note there is nothing inherently wrong with them. The problem is with the feed and injections given to animals. Try to buy the meat of organic, grass fed animals. Same is the case with dairy.
I think elimination is one of the best ways to get rid of acne naturally. For the longest time, I thought I couldn’t quit sugar as I was so hooked to it. I was not so much into desserts, but I loved my 3 (sometimes 5) cups of tea every day. I just couldn’t fathom having a sugarless tea. Honey didn’t do it for me. But one day, I quit sugar. Just like that. I still drink tea, but without sugar. You just have to keep your eyes on the prize.
Eat More Fruits And Vegetables
This goes without saying. Fruits and vegetables are your best friends if you want to get rid of acne. An easy way to have more fruits and vegetables in your diet is juicing them. You can also make green smoothies. If you currently have severe acne, I suggest having two glasses of fresh juice or smoothie every day.
Makeup can be a culprit when it comes to acne. Unfortunately, during a breakout, we rely on foundation to hide acne. Foundation can clog pores. I just avoiding makeup completely when dealing with a breakout. Once you get rid of acne, you can start wearing it again. But make sure you only use oil-free makeup that is suitable for acne-prone skin.
I know it is said that you should not exfoliate daily but my skin feels oily if I do not use my natural scrub. You can make a scrub using the following ingredients:
Powdered Orange Peels
Powdered Pomegranate Peels
Mix all these in equal quantities in keep in a jar. When using, take about a tablespoon of your scrub and add some milk to it. Scrub your face gently with it and leave it on for a while. Wash off and follow with your daily cleanser.
Tea Tree Oil
After washing my face, I apply The Body Shop Tea Tree Skin Clearing Daily Solution all over my face. This product is a pre-serum and helps to control oil on the face. After this, I use the tea tree oil on my pimples. These two products work well to keep acne at bay. I know the body shop products can be a bit pricey, but these two products go a long way. They will last you 4-6 months, so I suggest investing in them.
One of the main causes of acne is sugar spike. When your blood glucose level rises, your skin becomes oily. That’s why acne patients are advised to stay away from sugar. Unfortunately, sugary foods aren’t the only things that cause a blood sugar spike. Carbs and starches also cause your blood sugar level to rise. You cannot cut out carbs and starches, as they are a part of a healthy diet. What you can do instead is incorporate foods that keep blood sugar in check, Cinnamon is one thing that can help you do that. Try to have a pinch of cinnamon powder every day. I sprinkle cinnamon over my tea.
Lemons are also great for keeping blood sugar in check. Additionally, sugar is also great for cleansing the body. Squeeze one lemon in a glass of water and drink every day. Do not add sugar as that would be beating the purpose.
Get Rid Of Acne Naturally: The Bottom Line
Your face is a reflection of your overall health. If you have acne, you must treat the problem from within. Medicines are only a temporary solution. The basic reason why you have acne is that:
- You are eating foods that your body does not want (sugar, processed foods, allergens, etc).
- You are not eating foods that your body need (fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, etc).
Foods that your body does not want makes your skin oily. Foods that your body does want and is not getting enough of causes a lack of nutrients. Personally, I think acne revolves around food. Solve this issue, and you will have the skin of your dreams.
